Important Election Reminder

My wife decided to write an election reminder for the people in our lives. I thought it was also a good way to introduce my blog, rather than just doing a general invite like I originally wanted.

Hello all,

Election day is almost here, and we want to take this opportunity to share with you our beliefs regarding this election. As we all know, so many issues of great importance are facing our country right now. For us, the most important issue is preserving life at all stages. Because we believe in this so strongly, we are requesting that you cast your ballot for the candidate that is most closely pro-life, John McCain.

In America, we legally kill about one million babies per year. While we have great compassion for those facing a difficult situation, the one who is innocent should not be forced to make the ultimate sacrifice by losing their life before they were even able to speak. There are so many resources and alternatives available to a woman besides abortion that should be promoted instead. While there are many very important issues at stake, such as taxes, international issues and healthcare, how the next President's policies affect our personal finances, international relations, etc are secondary issues compared with the abortion issue.

The following resources explain in more depth why we have made this choice. We understand that not everyone may agree with us, and we respect everyone's opinion. The only thing we ask is that you take a few minutes to read the articles and watch the videos and inform yourself before voting. Every vote counts, and we are privileged in this country to live in freedom and to have the right to vote.

Thank you and God Bless!

I've read those articles from focus on the family. I've read some other ones on the same topic from focus on the family and other places. They have some good points, but they distort the truth. They present Obama this extreme personality that loves to kill babies which simply is not true. I do not totally agree with Obama's view on abortion. But he has and will put policies in place and worked towards reducing abortions. Read this interview with Donald Miller. http://burnsidewriterscollective.blogspot.com/2008/09/interview-with-donald-miller.html. Donald Miller comes off a little odd in this interview at times I think but I think he has some valid points.

I hear so often that Obama supports partial birth abortion and that he voted against a ban of it. While he did vote against a ban, it's so much more complex than that. He has stated many times that he opposes partial birth abortion. He will not vote for a ban in every case though. There was no room for allowing it when it's a choice between the life of the mother and the life of the baby. I understand why he voted against that. I also hear alot about the born alive act. Babies that are born are required to be cared for by doctors because of the Hippocratic oath. But Obama voted against it because of riders that were attached to the bill. You can not simply look at yes or no votes on these things. It's so much more complex than that. Obama really wants to reduce the number of abortions. I think that is a step in the right direction. We've had a pro-life president for the last 8 years and the number of abortions has not decreased one bit.

I believe that abortion is a symptom of a much deeper problem and simply making it illegal will not solve that problem. The church should focus it's energy on building relationships with those people in those situations rather than focusing so much time and money on trying to make it illegal. It's focusing a symptom and letting the disease keep going.

Most important is to look at Jesus' view on this. He never mentioned it once in his recorded ministry. He did say love the lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind and love your neighbor as yourself. I think that was the main message of his ministry. Certainly killing an unborn child is not loving that child. But neglecting the poor and underprivileged in this country and the world for that matter is not loving them either. What happens to those babies after they are born? I hear such an outcry from many Christians about abortion, but not very much from christians about the homeless, or the kids hooked on drugs because they grew up in a crappy neighborhood or a crappy home. We need to learn how to love the people we've got around us.

God loves life. I think most Christians would agree on that. But the church jumps right in line behind war. I don't know if I can say war is wrong in all cases. That's an entirely different debate. But if life is really supposed to be valued so much then it should be consistant for babies, chidren, adults. Whether they are from Iraq or Afgahnastan or America. The church should really be much less enthusiastic about war.

In the end, God ordains leaders. We are a fallen people and so our leaders will be fallen. No candidate will be perfect. The world will continue whether Obama or McCain is elected. Our political involvement should not hang so much on 1 political candidate. We as Christians should be involved in our everyday life through conversations that challenge our thinking, through helping those that need help, and through talking to our elected leaders about issues we feel are important. I think this election is important, but not as important as the conservative right would have us think or the liberal left would have us think.

I am going to vote for Obama because I believe in his ideals. He has a heart for helping the lower class of our society. That was a huge part of Jesus' ministry. John McCain's policies that relate to those areas do not help those people. They benefit the wealthy. His health care policy benefit's me because I am a young healthy person that never goes to the doctor. Obama's benefit's those that can't get health care. McCain's tax plan gives tax cuts to the rich. Obama's plan benefit's those who need tax cuts. McCain wants to deregulate everything and let the free market take care of everything. Obama see's the need for the government to regulate industries and keep them accountable for their actions. I do not think that abortion is the only issue to vote on. There are many things that Jesus stood for and in my opinion Obama adresses those things better than McCain. And it is so important to look past a yes or no vote and see what each candidate has done and what each candidate wants to do. I would also say that it's important to get your information about each candidate at more than just citizen link. I have no doubt that they have good motives, but they are very biased. Read and listen about each candidate from places you may not agree with. Get more than one view point. Citizen link does not have a corner on truth. No one person or organization has it all figured out.

Thanks for reading. I very much respect your opinions. I hope my writing was clear enough.
